Task Hierarchy and Subtasks

Easily manage and organize your work by creating subtasks within tasks, with flexible options for task assignment, due dates, and more.

Updated over a week ago

In Productive, you can break down larger tasks into manageable parts using subtasks. This allows for more detailed planning and execution, ensuring every aspect of a task is covered.

Creating and Managing Subtasks

  • Adding Subtasks
Within any task, click the "Add Subtasks" button to create a new subtask. Enter the title and press enter.

  • Subtask Management
After creating a subtask, you can assign it to a team member, set a due date, or change its workflow status.

  • Additional Actions
Use the three-dot menu next to the subtask to access more options like converting it into a regular task, changing the parent task, editing its details, or deleting and duplicating it.

Key Points about Subtasks

  • Task Hierarchy

Subtasks create a clear hierarchy within your tasks, helping you keep the main task as an overarching objective while tracking progress on smaller, more specific parts.

  • Closing Tasks

Closing the main task doesn’t automatically close its subtasks. Similarly, closing all subtasks doesn’t close the main task.

  • Task Conversion

You can convert a subtask into a regular task if it becomes more significant. Similarly, a main task can be converted into a subtask of another task.

  • Changing Parent Tasks

If needed, you can change the parent task of a subtask by selecting the subtask and adjusting its parent.
