Simple Editor: Overview

Learn when and why to use the Simple Editor to quickly set up budgets and deals.

Updated this week

The Simple Editor is a guided way to set up the financial structure of a budget or deal. It's best suited for straightforward setups that don't require the full flexibility of the Advanced Editor.

Why Use the Simple Editor?

The Simple Editor works well for:

  • Standard client budgets and deals with a clear billing type

  • Internal budgets where all work is non-billable

  • Teams that want a faster setup without configuring every service detail manually

It allows you to:

  • Select a budget type β€” Time and Materials, Fixed Price, or Non-billable

  • Add and configure services and expenses

  • Customize billable rates and set estimates per service

  • Mark individual services as non-billable using the dollar sign toggle, even within a T&M or Fixed budget

πŸ‘‰ For step-by-step setup instructions, see How to Set Up a Budget or Deal Using the Simple Editor.

How to Enable It

You can choose the Simple Editor when creating a new budget or deal in the wizard. Uncheck the Advanced Editor box at the bottom of the wizard screen.

πŸ“Œ The default checkbox behavior depends on your settings under Settings > Budget.

What the Editor Looks Like

The editor has two panels:

  • Left sidebar β€” where you set the budget type, billable rate, and budget-level options like Fixed cap

  • Right panel β€” where you add services and configure estimates and rates. The section name and columns on the right change based on your billable rate selection on the left

The editor also includes an Expenses budget section at the bottom for tracking expense line items separately from time services.

Internal Budgets

For internal budgets, the budget type is locked to Non-billable, as internal work isn't billed to clients.

Only time allocation options are available: hours/days per person, hours/days per service, and total hours per budget.

When to Switch to the Advanced Editor

Switch to the Advanced Editor if your budget or deal requires:

  • Complex service structures across multiple sections

  • Full control over billing rules per service

πŸ“Œ Once you switch to the Advanced Editor, you can't go back to the Simple Editor for that budget or deal.
