Simple Editor: Non-Billable Budget Type Explained

Learn how to set up a Non-billable budget in the Simple Editor to track internal work and hours without billing the client.

Updated this week

The Non-billable budget type is for work that won't be invoiced to a client. It tracks time and costs without any billing or invoicing options.

πŸ“Œ Internal budgets are always Non-billable.

Budget

The Budget section in the left sidebar sets how you track hours. Choose from:

  • Total hours β€” set one total hour estimate across all people and services

  • Hours/days per person β€” allocate estimated hours per person

  • Hours/days per service β€” allocate estimated hours per service

For each row, fill in the Service Type, Unit, and Estimate inline.

πŸ“Œ Select Show Custom Service Name to manually enter the service name, and Show Description to quickly describe the service for better organization.

Time Tracking and Bookings

You can enable or disable time tracking and bookings per service using the clock icon on each service row.

Non-Billable Services in T&M and Fixed Budgets

If you're working with a T&M or Fixed Price budget and need some services to be non-billable, you don't need to switch to a Non-billable budget type.

Use the dollar sign toggle on individual service rows to mark specific services as non-billable while keeping the rest billable.

Expenses Budget

The Expenses budget section tracks expense line items separately from services. Each expense service creates a Piece service line item.

Since the budget itself is Non-billable, expense services can only be set to Non-billable. Time tracking can be enabled via the clock icon, though if you've already set up hourly service lines above, you likely don't need it here.
