Timer

Track time directly as you work.

Updated over a week ago

As described in this article, there are two ways to track time in Productive. The first is to manually enter the time worked on a specific task or service. The second is the timer. This option lets you start tracking time directly as you start working.

Note that you can only track time for today using the timer. If you want to track time retroactively, use the manual option instead. The manual option is described in more detail here.

Starting the timer

To activate the timer, click Timer in the bottom left. The icon in the top right has to be a clock. If it is not, click on it to revert to timer mode.

Once that is done, either select a service from the ones suggested below or pick one manually using the top menu. Click the play icon next to it and the timer will start.

Alternatively, you can also head to Time - My time. Once again, check that the timer option is selected:

Enter the desired service, the time worked prior to starting the time (e.g. 1 h) and click on Start.

Tracking the timer

Once the timer has been started, a bar will appear indicating the elapsed time.

Placing your mouse above the red bar will show you two things. Firstly, it will indicate when you started the timer (03:00 in this instance). Secondly, it will show how much time you had tracked on that service that day prior to starting tracking (00:00 in this instance).

Time entry log

You can also check out when and how time was tracked for a specific service. Find a time entry, e.g. via Time - My time. Click the menu icon and then View timer logs.

You will see a list of all entries that make up this time entry:

Each entry is split into timer entries and manual entries, and the total breakdown can be found at the bottom.

Automatic timer stop

Accidents and oversights can always occur, and the timer is no exception. If you forget about the time and leave it on, this is what will happen:

  • After 8 hours of inactivity, you'll get an email as a reminder

  • After 24 hours of inactivity, the timer will stop automatically

  • The recorded time will be saved and you can edit it to the actual value
