Private Folders in Projects

Keep project folders visible to your team and contractors, while hiding them from clients.

Updated over a week ago

Private folders let you hide entire sections of a project from clients. Everything inside a private folder: task lists, tasks, and todos remains visible to your team but completely hidden from clients.

📌 If you’re new to client access, see our article on adding clients to Productive and projects.

📌 To hide individual tasks from employees or contractors instead, see our article on private tasks.

1) Create or edit private folders

You can make a folder private while creating it:

  • Go to your project and select + Add new folder from the folder dropdown.

  • In the Client access section, choose Hidden from clients and click Save.

  • Apply the same setting when editing an existing folder.

📌 More information on how to use and organize task folders can be found in this article.

2) Client access when working with private folders

Hidden items always carry the yellow lock marker.

📌 Note: Folders hidden from clients remain accessible to employees and contractors added to the project.

Clients will not see private folders or any of their contents. For example, if a task is inside a private folder, clients can’t be added to it, and they won’t appear in the search bar while adding assignees.

Important: When a task in a public folder depends on a task from a private folder, the task title will display a yellow lock icon. Clients, however, will see a “No access” message.
