Changing the Client Company for a Project or a Budget

Learn how to reassign a budget or a project to a new client in Productive.

If you need to reassign your budget or a project to a different client in Productive, follow these steps:

1) Changing the Client for a Budget Within a Project

Important: If a budget is part of a project, the client company cannot be changed directly from the budget sidebar. You must update it from the project sidebar.

To reassign the client company for a budget that's part of a project:

  1. Go to the project sidebar and click Edit project.

  2. Select the new client company and confirm your choice by selecting Update project.

Important: Changing the client here updates all budgets, bookings, and time entries associated with the project.

Note: If invoices have already been issued, the client cannot be changed directly. See below for a possible solution.

2) Changing the Client for Standalone Budgets

To update the client for a budget not linked to any project:

  1. Open the budget sidebar and click Edit general budget info.

  2. Reassign the budget to a different client company as needed. Select Update budget to confirm your choice.

Important: If invoices have already been issued for the budget, the client cannot be changed directly. See “Practical Scenarios and Solutions” below for workarounds.

Practical Scenarios and Solutions

Option 1: Invoices Already Issued

If the existing client company has issued invoices, follow these steps to unlock the option to change the client:

  1. Delete any issued invoices associated with the budget or project.

  2. Once the invoices are deleted, repeat the steps to update the client.

Option 2: Duplicate and Reassign

If you’d prefer not to delete existing invoices or need to reassign only one budget out of several, you can duplicate the budget and assign it to a new client:

  • Duplicate the Budget

    Create a copy of the budget and assign it to a new project (optional) under the new client.

  • Reassign Time Entries to the New Budget (Optional)

    In the original budget:

    1) Bulk-select all time entries by hovering next to the Time entry field and clicking the checkbox.

    2) A blue toolbar will appear. Select Service, then choose the duplicated budget under the new client. All time entries will now be assigned to the new client’s budget.
