Assigning a Manager to an Employee

Assign a Manager to a person in the profile tab.

Updated this week

In Productive, the Manager field is a powerful tool designed to help you structure your organization by clearly defining reporting lines.

Assigning managers is essential for ensuring that roles, responsibilities, and communication channels are well-established within your team.

While the Manager field is available on all plans, only specific users—such as Admins, Profitability Managers, and Managers—can assign or edit it, ensuring that this critical information is managed securely and accurately.

Note: You can assign a manager to your Employees, but not to Contractors, Clients, or Contacts.

How to Assign a Manager

  • To assign a manager, go to the person’s profile page, and add the desired information in the Manager field.

  • This can also be done inline via the table layout in the My Company (hover over your avatar in the upper right) > People tab.

Note: Two people cannot be set as managers for each other. For example, if you set Lucy as Luke’s manager, Luke will not be available as a manager option for Lucy.

Organizational Charts

Once you’ve assigned managers for all your employees, navigate to My Company by hovering over your avatar in the upper right and selecting My Company.

There, select the Org Chart tab to see the organizational structure of your company.

You can also view the organizational hierarchy for each individual employee by navigating to their profile and selecting the Org Chart tab.

Using the Manager Field as a Filter and Field

In Resourcing > Employees, you can use the Manager field as a filter to display people who report to a specific manager.

You can also group people by the Manager field, making it easier to visualize team structures.

The same filtering, grouping, and field customization options are available in Reports using the People data source.
