Using the Time Tracking Widget (Desktop App)

Track time directly from your desktop with Productive’s time tracking widget. Start/stop the timer, link tasks, and manage entries efficiently.

If you prefer tracking time from your desktop, the time tracking widget in the Productive desktop app gives you a simple way to start, pause, and switch timers.

It mirrors the Day view in My Time, but is available directly from your menu bar or system tray.

What the Widget Does

The time tracking widget appears in your menu bar (Mac) or system tray (Windows) and provides quick access to:

  • Selecting a budget and service

  • Starting or pausing a timer

  • Switching between work without creating overlapping entries

  • Adding a task or note to your time entry

Opening the Time Tracking Widget

  1. Download and open the Productive desktop app.

  2. Once the app is running, the Productive icon appears in your menu bar (Mac) or system tray (Windows).

  3. Click the icon to open the time tracking widget.

Tracking Time

Before you can start the timer or add a time entry, you must select a service from a deal or budget.
This step is required for all entries. Once selected, the timer becomes available or a new entry can be added.

1) Open the widget and make sure the correct day is selected.

2) Select the client company from the service dropdown.

3) Find the relevant project, budget, or deal, then select the service you want to log time against.

4) Add the duration or a time range (e.g., 9 AM to 2 PM), add notes, and click Save.


5) Optionally, skip the manual entry and click Start Timer to begin tracking immediately. Click Stop to pause the timer.

If you switch to another service, the timer for the previous service stops automatically and tracking begins for the new selection.

To resume a previously tracked service, open the widget and click Start next to that service.

Linking the Time Entry to a Task

If you're working on a specific task within a project and want to pin it to your time entry, open the task dropdown and select your task.

Time Tracking Suggestions

The widget also includes time tracking suggestions, based on:

  • Your pinned services

  • Services scheduled for you in the Resource Planner

  • Services you recently tracked time against

Clicking a suggestion creates an editable time entry with pre-filled budget/deal and service information. You can still add notes or adjust the duration.

Managing Time Entries

Click the three-dot menu next to each entry to:

  • Edit the entry

  • Pin the selected service for easy selection next time

  • Duplicate the entry

  • View timer logs (start and stop times with timestamps)

  • Delete the entry

Visibility of Time Entries

All time tracked through the time tracking widget syncs automatically to the My Time section in Productive, keeping your entries up to date and organized.
