In Productive, every user is assigned a permission set that determines what they can see and do. Permission sets ensure that employees, contractors, and clients have access to the right tools. This article explains how to change a user’s permission set.
Managing permissions this way helps you protect sensitive data, keep workflows efficient, and match each user’s access to their role.
📌 Permissions also apply to AI agents. Each agent is assigned permissions that are limited to those its manager holds (usually its creator). To create agents and configure their permissions, see Setting Up and Managing AI Agents.
👉 For a role-by-role breakdown of default permission sets, see Default Permission Sets: Employees, Clients, and Contractors.
Steps to Change User Permissions
Select the User
Navigate to Settings > Users, Resourcing > Employees, or CRM > Contacts to find and select the user whose permissions you want to change. Click on the Permission Set field in the user’s Info tab.Update the Permission Set
Here, you can switch the user’s role to Employee, Client, or Contractor. You can then assign them either a default system permission set (described below) or a custom permission set.
Important Consideration
Before adding users, such as Employees and Contractors, ensure that you have a sufficient number of paid seats in your account.
