Setting Up Overtime Tracking (Beta)

Turn on overtime in a time tracking policy, then enable overtime tracking on budgets and deals.

Overtime in Productive is a manual flag on a single time entry. Someone tracks time as usual, then marks that specific entry as overtime, and it's calculated at a higher rate using a cost multiplier instead of the regular rate.

It's set up in two places: a Time Tracking Policy, and individually on each budget or deal.

Enabling overtime in a time tracking policy and on a budget or deal are both required before anyone can mark an entry as overtime: the policy controls who can use it, the budget or deal controls where.

📌 This article covers the manually flagged, per-entry overtime. If you're looking for one of these instead:

As overtime is set up as part of time tracking policies, it's available on the Ultimate subscription plan.

Enabling Overtime in a Time Tracking Policy

Go to Settings > Time Tracking > Time Tracking Policies and open a policy:

  • Expand the Overtime section.

  • Turn on Enable Overtime Tracking. This allows employees assigned to the policy to mark time entries as overtime.

  • Set the Hourly Cost Multiplier (for example, 1.5). Overtime cost is calculated as worked hours × base cost rate × multiplier. For example, at a $50/h cost rate with a 1.5x multiplier, overtime hours cost $75/h.

📌 A person can only have one time tracking policy assigned at a time.

If that policy doesn't have overtime enabled, the Overtime option won't appear on their time entries. If no policy in your organization has overtime enabled, the feature stays hidden across the whole account.

Enabling Overtime Tracking on Budgets and Deals

Overtime tracking needs to be turned on for each budget or deal. Open a budget or a deal, then go to the sidebar Settings tab.

  • Turn on Enable Overtime in the Overtime Tracking section.

  • Once enabled, a message confirms: "Overtime fields now available: Overtime and Cost multiplier."

With overtime tracking on, the budget or deal's Time tab gains two new fields: Overtime and Cost multiplier.

👉 Once this is set up, see Tracking Overtime for how employees mark entries as overtime and how to view overtime costs.
