Applying and Managing Document Styles

Apply a document style to a template, adjust layout options, and track changes to existing styles.

Before applying a style, make sure you've created and customized one. 👉 See Setting Up Document Styles and Customizing Document Styles.

A document style only affects your PDFs once it's applied to a document template — the style defines how a document looks, and the template determines which document type (invoice, proposal, budget, or purchase order) it applies to and how it's organized.

Applying a Document Style to a Template

To attach a style to a template:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Document Templates. Select an existing template or create a new one.

  2. From the Style dropdown, choose your customized document style.

  3. Make any final adjustments to the template and save your changes.

👉 For more on setting up templates, see Setting Up Document Templates.

Further Customization in the Document Template

Once a document style is applied, each section under Customization (e.g., Header, Footer) includes a Layout dropdown for additional adjustment.

For example, under Customization > Header, choose from five header layouts, each arranging elements like your company logo and Bill From details differently.

Text styles set in the Document Style Editor (Heading 1, Heading 2, Body Text) carry over directly to the document template editor, keeping formatting consistent between the two.

Making Changes to an Existing Style

If you adjust an existing document style, Productive highlights any unsaved changes so you can review them before saving.
